The recent recession has seriously stretched the national psyche. While there are signs of improvement, few solutions to our long term challenges are emerging from our political system. As unsettling as the current picture is, it pales in comparison to the problems weâll face in the future if we don't get our spiraling entitlement obligations under control. And while serious problems loom, Congress seems more interested in engaging in petty partisan battles than it does working together to protect our collective future.
You might ask yourself, "Who elected these clowns?" Well, the short answer is "We did, or at least we sat by while it happened. And while it's easy to say that we get the government that we deserve, the truth is we are hostages to a system that increasingly caters to the ideological extremes. With closed, low-turnout primaries, partisan re-districting, and a campaign finance system that is largely transactional in nature for incumbents, it's hard for independent, solutions-focused candidates to break through.
With our problems growing to unmanageable levels and our leaders growing more intractable by the day, you might think we are simply debating the trajectory of the American decline curve. When will our creditors say, "Enough is enough" and impose upon us Greek-styled austerity programs? When will people take to the streets in violent protest? How fast are we going to become a third world nation?
It's easy to look at all of this and think that there's nothing anyone can do. Well, at the Common Sense Coalition, we don't think this is our only option. And we hope, deep down, that you don't either
If you are like us, if you refuse to believe our best days are behind us, if you are willing to stand up and say "no more", if youre truly willing to hold Congress accountable and demand a better future for yourself and your children, we'd like to welcome you to the Common Sense Coalition.
We formed the Coalition in an effort to stop this partisan bickering and return Congress to the sensible center. Most Americans are fiscally responsible and socially tolerant, but our elected public servants aren't offering that option. We formed it to bring like-minded Americans together to demand that Congress do its job and act in our interest, not their own.
By signing up for our email list, "liking" the Coalition on Facebook, watching our video, and encouraging your Congressperson to sign our Common Sense pledge, you are openly standing with others who believe we deserve more.
As our numbers grow, so will our influence. We will work with centrist candidates to ensure their message gets out. We will actively seek to bring together other centrist organizations to create a real movement in the middle of the political spectrum. And we will work to bring a voice to the silent majority in the United States who want a fiscally responsible and socially tolerant America.
Please stand with us as we work to preserve our collective future.
The Founders of The Common Sense Coalition,
